Montcalm Area Reading Council

Office hours: Monday - Thursday 2 p.m. - 4p.m.;

other hours by appointment.

The Montcalm Area Reading Council, through dedicated volunteers, community partners and resources, provides free literacy education to benefit the greater Montcalm area.  MARC ensures all people have the opportunity to learn to read, write, and speak in English, compute and solve problems proficiently to achieve one's goals, mutually develop one's knowledge, and full potential.

Volunteers are trained by MARC.  They meet one-on-one with students in a mutually agreed upon public place - often a library - and work together to increase reading skills, math skills, or to learn English as a Second Language.  They work at a pace the student can handle, aiming for the goals they have set together.  There is no cost to the student.

Students are of all ages - currently the average age is 31 - and of varying grade level - many test at 4th grade level in the beginning. Obtaining a GED, learning to read to a child, or improving reading comprehension for college can be the reason to get started - it all depends on the individual.

Tutors are of all ages, too.  Some are college students, some are retirees.  All of them are readers who want to share the gift of reading with others.  They have taken MARC training to understand how to share the joy of reading, writing and computing with others.

Our community partners help MARC fund this program, making books free to students and training free to tutors.  MARC is entirely funded by the generous people of the greater Montcalm area.  We thank you for that!
